Tadeo shared his research on ultrathin silicon membranes for implantable dialyzers, highlighting the potential of nanofabricated membrane technologies to support next-generation kidney replacement therapies and enhance patients’ quality of life.

The KIDNEW project has been recognised by the European Commission’s Innovation Radar for three breakthrough innovations that are advancing the development of next-generation implantable kidney replacement therapies. This recognition highlights the project’s potential to deliver transformative solutions for patients with kidney failure.
The three innovations recognised are:

- Surface engineering technologies for long-term hemocompatibility and antifouling in implantable devices
Novel surface modification strategies designed to improve blood compatibility, reduce fouling, and support the long-term performance of implantable renal devices. - Integrated sensing and safety monitoring system for implantable kidney replacement devices
An advanced monitoring platform that combines sensing, communication, and safety functions to enable continuous supervision and improved reliability of implantable kidney technologies. - Implantable nanoporous hemodialyzer for dialysis without extracorporeal blood circuit
A breakthrough implantable dialysis technology based on ultra-high-flux nanoporous silicon membranes, aiming to provide continuous blood purification without the need for conventional extracorporeal dialysis circuits.

KIDNEW became member of ISO/TC 150/SC 2/WG 5 “Renal replacement, detoxification and apheresis”, which writes the world-wide standards on hemodialysis membranes (ISO 8637-series). Participation is focused on the principle of implantable hemodialysis filter + extracorporeal miniaturized dialysate regenerating device.

EIC Booster granted to KIDNEW
The European Innovation Council (EIC) has granted a 50k Euro booster to facilitate KIDNEW in making a business plan to combine the KIDNEW stage A chip-based filter with an extracorporeal dialysate-regenerating technology from the firm Nextkidney.

Professor Fokko Wieringa presented to a large audience at the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association/European Renal Care Association. The implantable artificial kidney was covered, and many new contacts were made.

The development of the silicon nanopore membranes was presented by Dr. Swathi Suran at the bio-artificial organ session from Euromembranes. The presentation was well received and led to new interactions in the field of membranes.

KIDNEW organizes stakeholder workshop
April 3, 2024
The KIDNEW consortium organized a stakeholder workshop to extract (user) requirements for the future implantable artificial kidney. The workshop was attended by relevant stakeholders from many disciplines and different sides of the ecosystem. In total, 33 participants with varying backgrounds from academic, industry, RTO/NGO and clinical. Very engaged and lively discussions in this multidisciplinary settings yielded new insights in the current status of development. In addition, new challenges were identified and the way forward was determined.
